2016 was a terrific year for theatre. I was fortunate enough to see and review many shows between January and August before I left for a year abroad in Canada which took me away from blogging. I decided to do a top 3 favourite shows rating rather than a top 5 due to my break, so here it is!
3. I was very lucky to see Waitress the musical on Broadway in December. It was a show which made me cry with laughter as well as automatically rise to my feet at the end of the performance. I was blown away with the music and script for the show which was utterly charming and charismatic. The cast were phenomenal as they all brought something different which made the piece as an ensemble a truly brilliant one.
2. I had been looking forward to Dreamgirls all year and it was one of the most glamorous and glitzy shows I have ever seen! Amber Riley as Effie White was jaw droppingly good as she belted the big numbers from the well known show. Dreamgirls had the biggest wow-factor in terms of seeing something familiar brought to life in front of you. Definitely one of the biggest and most impressive shows of 2016.
1. Groundhog Day is a show I wish I could see time and time again (see what I did there?). It was the most inventive and exciting piece of theatre I have seen all year, from the intricate turn table stage in the Old Vic Theatre to the ingenious way of repeating the plot over and over without it getting tiresome. Groundhog Day was an incredible show which I would go back to in a heartbeat.
Overall I saw some wonderful theatre in 2016, from the gut-wrenching and emotional Titanic to the shocking and hilarious Hand to God, and also my first time seeing Miss Saigon on stage! 2016 has certainly been memorable. I cannot wait to see what next year will bring!
